A Little Bit of This & That

The Random Things We Love to Make and Do

Advent Calendar – Last Year November 29, 2011

I figured that since December is just a few short days away, I should really get working on my advent calendar for this year.  While I’m doing that, I thought I would re-post the advent calendar I made last year.  It was so glittery, and fun, and (best of all) sugar-free!

.

Last year I found a really great advent calendar idea on Giver’s Log, where she created a printable for an advent calendar on post-it notes. I loved the cute design, but wasn’t brave enough to put post it notes through our printer, like she suggested.  so I modified it a bit. Here’s the end result:

I feel like this calendar is almost like a piece of art, so I put it where all great art belongs: on the fridge. It’s sort of big, so here’s a close up of the top to help get a better idea of what’s going on here:

For each day, there is a graphic showing a string of lights. Every day one more lightbulb is added.  Here’s what 25 looked like:

I put each day’s graphic onto a square of green paper for a background.  (for the full tutorial with measurements, *click here*) I also printed the graphics onto red paper, and used a small piece of mounting strip on the back to cover the matching white square.  This way you will be able to remove the red paper later without ripping the white paper underneath.

Squares 1-24 we attached to the fridge this way, but for the 25th I attached an extra glittery square background to make it pop.  It is THE day after all.

I also created a “Days ’til Xmas” sign, which you can print out *here*.

.

I put an empty green square on the top left, and the “days ’til x-mas” sign to the right, with all the days underneath (in rows of 4, with the 25th on it’s own).  We liked the look of having all of the pieces a little skewed instead of perfectly straight. We embellished with some cute glittery ornaments I found at Michael’s.

.

Each day, pull the appropriate red square off.  We then placed it in the empty green square. I had Skylar count the days left until Christmas, and write that number for our countdown.

.

Skylar did the majority of the taping and sticking, and she loved the end result. If you are looking for a quick and easy (but visually popping!) advent calendar, this might work for you.

Have a great December!
