A Little Bit of This & That

The Random Things We Love to Make and Do

Muffin Tin Monday – April Fools! March 28, 2011

April Fools Day is coming up this Friday, so we thought we should do a muffin tin meal in celebration.  We figured that doing it a little early might help you all have a little fun with your families on the big day.  Here’s what we made:

.

.

Top Row (left to right): “Hot Dog”, “Juice”, “Ice Cream Cone”

Bottom Row: “Shoestring Fries”, “Carrots and Peas”, “Sushi”

.

You may have guessed that everything in the tin is not what it appears to be.  Here’s the actual food:

.

The “Hot Dog” is actually a banana dog.  This is a favorite in our house.  It may not be the trickiest item in our tin, but we love the idea of it.  It’s simply a banana in a hot dog bun topped with peanut butter and jelly.  Yum!

.

The “Shoestring Fries” are really just pieces of an apple that I julienned in my mandolin.

.

The “Juice” is really jello.  We mixed up jello the regular way, but poured it into a glass with a straw before putting it in the fridge.

.

The “Carrots and Peas” were really fun.  It’s actually candy!  Green runts, and a few orange starbursts (each cut into 4 pieces).

.

The “Ice Cream Cone” is actually…wait for it…mashed potatoes!!

.

The “Sushi” turned out great, and was probably my favorite part.  It is make completely out of dessert items.  I took a few pictures of the process:

.

First, cut a few circles and ovals out of a slice of pound cake:

.

.

For the round sushi, cut a piece of dark fruit leather (I used grape), and wrap it around the outside.  Use a dab of white frosting to keep it in place.

.

.

Then spread a little of that white frosting onto the top of the cake, and dip it in coconut shavings.  I used a little bit of orange sugar to top it off.

.

For the oval shaped sashimi, I covered the top and sides of the cake with frosting, and again dippped it in coconut shavings.  A swedish fish and another fruit leather strip will finish that one off.

.

For the ginger, I put a pink starburst in the microwave for about 10 seconds.  Then I flattened it out and piled it up.

.

The wasabi was supposed to be done in a similar fashion to the ginger, but I didn’t realize there were no green starburst in the pack I bought (Do they even exist??).  So instead, I slightly warmed 2 pieces of green candy melt in the microwave, and mushed it into a little pile.  All together, it looked like this:

.

.

We had so much fun making this tin, and Skylar especially had fun eating it!

.

.

I hope today’s tin gave you a bit of a laugh to start off the week!  If you want to see some of the other tins that were created, check out Muffin Tin Mom’s site.
